I’ve been playing around with the idea of a creature that’s basically made from ground beef for a Slaughterhouse based adventure for Xcrawl Classics (XCC). They’ll be part of a meat grinder themed room and since they’re already ground up they’ll be immune to damage from the rooms giant blades. The idea is based on one I had for a postcard I created back in 2019 when I was thinking about creating a game company called Trunk Force 7. I haven’t abandoned TF7 completely, but I think having most of my work branded as Joe or Joe Abboreno fits better overall since I’m still a one man band. First the new sketches and the pencil I used by Caran D’Ache.

I’m liking the watercolor pencil. It’s kind of nice that the illustration is fairly reworkable till I start painting over it with gouache. I typically like to sketch with Derwent Inktense pencils but I’m not 100% sure they won’t bleed through the paint later. Markers are notorious for bleeding through paint that’s why you shouldn’t sketch an underpainting with sharpies or something similar. The Inktense pencils are probably fine, but until I test them out I don’t want to take the chance. Watercolor and gouache are almost the same thing so I think I’m safe combining the two.
And finally, here are jpegs of the front and back of the Blades of Mragdathun. I think these’ll work pretty well in the XCC ‘Zine I’ve got planned for this year.
